Getting dentures is a big step toward reclaiming your smile from tooth loss. However, they do come with a few lifestyle adjustments. One of the biggest has to do with your diet. While you won’t need to give up all your favorite foods, some are just too hard, sticky, or risky to enjoy without damaging your prosthetics or irritating your gums. Continue reading to see the worst menu items for dentures so you can steer clear and enjoy meals in comfort.
Nuts and Seeds
Almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds, and other crunchy favorites can wreak havoc on dentures. They’re hard to chew and can put uneven pressure on your appliance, causing chips or cracks. Small seeds can also get lodged underneath your dentures and irritate or damage your gums.
If you’re craving something crunchy, try soft roasted chickpeas or steamed veggies. These offer a softer but still satisfying bite.
Sticky Candy
Caramel, toffee, taffy, and even some chewy fruit snacks are no-goes for denture wearers. Sticky treats can pull on your prosthetics, loosen them, or disrupt the seal that helps them stay in place. They’re also packed with sugar, which can potentially cause trouble for any remaining teeth you have.
If you’re in the mood for something sweet, try dark chocolate or sugar-free ice cream that melts in your mouth instead.
Popcorn
Popcorn is mostly harmless, right up until a kernel sneaks up on your smile. Not only do the hard, unpopped kernels have the potential to slip underneath your prosthetic, but they can also crack or chip your false teeth if you’re not careful.
If you’re a popcorn fan, be very mindful of how you eat it. Rather not risk it and want something salty? Try baked veggie chips or puffed snacks that are light and easy to chew.
Raw Fruits and Veggies
Apples, raw carrots, and corn on the cob are tricky with dentures. Biting straight into them can cause your appliance to shift or hurt your gums. However, they’re full of essential vitamins you need, so instead of giving up, just start chopping and cooking.
Smaller, softer pieces that have been baked or steamed retain much of their nutritional value and are much easier to chew.
Tough Meats
Steak, jerky, and other chewy cuts of meat can wear out your dentures and your jaw pretty quickly. They require a strong bite and lots of chewing, which can strain your jaw joint or rub sores into your gums. Instead, try ground meats, tender slow-cooked cuts, or shredded chicken and fish.
Dentures can absolutely improve your quality of life—but they work best when you treat them with care. Avoiding tricky foods and preparing meals thoughtfully goes a long way in protecting your new smile.
