Hassle-Free Tips for Traveling with Clear Aligners

Clear aligners make it easier than ever to straighten your teeth without the hassle of brackets and wires—but what happens when life takes you on the road? Whether you’re heading out for a weekend getaway or a long vacation abroad, it’s important to plan ahead to keep your treatment on track. With a few simple tips, you can enjoy your trip while protecting your smile progress.

Pack the Essentials

Before you leave, make sure you have everything you need to care for your aligners properly. In addition to your current trays, pack:

  • Your previous and next set of aligners (just in case one gets lost or damaged)
  • A sturdy, ventilated case to store your aligners during meals
  • A travel-sized toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss
  • Aligner cleaning crystals or tablets
  • A small bottle of mouthwash or travel-friendly sanitizer

Keep these items in your carry-on bag instead of checked luggage so you can access them easily during your trip. Lost luggage is inconvenient—losing your aligners is worse.

Stay on Schedule

Even while traveling, it’s crucial to wear your aligners for 20–22 hours a day to maintain your progress. Time zone changes and irregular schedules can throw off your routine, so set phone reminders to help you stay consistent.

If you’ll be away for an extended period, ask your dentist if you can take additional aligner sets with you. That way, if it’s time to switch trays while you’re gone, you’ll already have the next stage of your treatment with you.

Be Mindful at Mealtime

One of the perks of aligner treatment is that you can remove your trays when you eat—but that flexibility also means you have to be extra careful on the go. Always store your aligners in their case while eating or drinking anything other than water. Wrapping them in a napkin or leaving them on a table is a quick way to lose them accidentally.

When you’re done eating, brush and rinse your teeth before putting your aligners back in. If brushing isn’t possible, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water or mouthwash until you can clean properly.

Keep Your Aligners Clean

Travel often means new environments, different foods, and limited sink access—but keeping your aligners clean doesn’t have to be complicated. Simply rinse them with cool water throughout the day and give them a deeper clean once daily using a dissolvable cleaning tablet. Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the plastic.

If you’ll be traveling somewhere without reliable access to clean water, bring bottled water for rinsing and cleaning.

Plan for the Unexpected

Life on the road can be unpredictable, but you can still stay prepared. Keep your dentist’s contact information handy in case of emergencies, and take a photo of your current aligners’ packaging before you leave—it’ll make it easier for your provider to replace them if needed.

If your aligner cracks or gets lost, don’t panic. Continue wearing your previous set and contact your dentist as soon as possible for guidance.

By staying organized and following your normal care routine, you can keep your aligner treatment on track no matter where your travels take you.
