Are Dental Checkups Necessary with Full Dentures?

When it comes to dental checkups, many people assume that their teeth get checked and that’s it. As a full denture wearer, you might imagine that you don’t need to see your dentist anymore, but this isn’t the case at all. It’s still important that you have your routine visits to ensure your oral health is in great shape. Here are three reasons why you shouldn’t skip your preventive dental care.

Checkups Are More Than Looking at Teeth

Checkups and cleanings are more than just teeth. Your gums, tongue, salivary glands, and other oral structures will need to be looked at as well. Your dentist will ensure there aren’t any other problems occurring in them. For instance, while cavities may be an issue of the past, bacteria in your mouth can still cause an infection in the soft tissues. This condition can make them inflamed, which can then cause your dentures to feel uncomfortable!

Your Dentures Can Stay in Great Shape

Your dentist will also take time to look at your prosthetic as well. They are made from high-quality, sturdy materials, but they can still develop a chip or crack from hard foods or if they accidentally take a tumble. By getting any damage fixed up with repairs or replacement, you can ensure a sharp edge does not injure your inner cheeks or lip.

Not only that, but hardened plaque will also be removed to lower your risk of an oral health issue. Minor stains may be polished off, so you can continue getting good use out of your full smile for years to come.

You Can Reline Your Dentures

Missing teeth typically lead to jawbone loss over time. The roots stimulate your jaw to keep it dense, but without them, it’ll shrink. This can change your facial appearance and increase wrinkles around your mouth. Thankfully, dentures help slow this down as they provide a bit of pressure through your gums, but they don’t fully stop it. Your prosthetic won’t fit as snugly as it once did and possibly slip more often as well.

Your dentist will double-check the fit during checkups. If it’s not snug, then you can get it relined to give you back your stable bite. That way, you don’t worry about it shifting while you show off your full smile.
