How Do Traditional Braces Work?
Traditional braces come with metal brackets and wires that work together to encourage tooth movement over time. Once Dr. Tran bonds the brackets to your teeth, he threads an archwire through them, ensuring it applies enough tension to start the shifting process. Over time, gaps will begin to close, space will become available, or realignment will occur, depending on your needs and treatment plan.
On average, you can expect to wear traditional braces for 2-3 years. Each patient is different, so the timeframe can vary.
What Orthodontic Issues Can Braces Fix?
Traditional braces are known for their ability to fix minor and complex orthodontic issues, some of which include:
Bite Misalignment
Poor bite alignment can cause jaw pain, difficulty eating, enamel erosion, and dental damage. However, traditional braces can shift overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites into their proper positions, allowing teeth to come together smoothly so that you enjoy a more visually pleasing aesthetic, and eating and speaking are easier than before.
Crowded & Crooked Teeth
Rotated, crooked, and crowded teeth are no match for metal braces. These brackets and wires can reposition teeth and create space, making your smile easier to clean and more visually pleasing. Depending on the severity of the issue, your dentist may need to use rubber bands or other attachments to encourage movement, but in the end, beautiful results are all you’ll see.
Gapped Teeth
Unsightly gaps can be easily fixed with traditional braces. With a carefully crafted treatment plan, the wire and brackets will work together to bring teeth closer together, eliminate the space, and help you maintain better oral health moving forward. Once you are finished with orthodontic treatment, you will feel more confident in your beautiful smile.
Caring for Your Braces
To keep your smile and appliances healthy, make sure you:
- Use the appropriate dental instruments to clean your teeth and gums at home. This may include a soft-bristled toothbrush, an interdental brush to get between brackets and wires, fluoride toothpaste, a water irrigator or dental floss, and mouthwash.
- Maintain follow-up appointments with us so we can tighten the wire and keep your teeth moving in the right direction. Also, continue with your biannual checkups and cleanings to ensure your teeth are cavity- and disease-free.
- Wear mouth protection if you plan to play sports or engage in physical activities. Also, if you grind your teeth, ask about a custom nightguard.
- Be mindful of your diet, limiting or avoiding hard, crunchy, and sticky/chewy foods that can damage your braces or increase your chances of cavities.
